Victory Hotel is one of those places you love to discover but are loathe to share, lest the next time you try to book into one of their three cabins they’re reserved by people who read about them in your words.<\/p>\n

And this is a place that bears repeating. Clearly a favorite with locals, who are abjectly happy and authentically good looking. No one bats an eye when our nine-year-old runs the pool game after dinner, except to show him a homemade bird whistle, a pretty little affair made of clay.<\/p>\n

We tried several of the local wines — a velvety golden Chardonnay from Shaw and Smith, to accompany creamy curried pumpkin soup, an edgy Pinot Noir from Bay of Fires for the scallops with mint falafel and coriander patties. The hamburger was thick and juicy, salad fresh from the garden with a herby balsamic.<\/p>\n

After another round of pool we tottered out to the self-catering BnB cottages (well not completely self catered, as evidenced by the whopping huge tray of food they sent with us to cook for breakfast.) In the morning, all of the vineyards and the Southern Ocean swept out before us. A grand spot for coffee, indeed.<\/p>\n
